International Driver's License allows you to travel abroad with confidence. The IDL is recognized worldwide as a valuable document identifying you as a properly licensed resident. No test is required, however, you must have a valid Native Driver's License and be 18 years of age or older to qualify.

International Driver Document, International Driver’s License

International Driver License can be used as identification in most places worldwide. It is common if a police officer for some reason stops you, or you need identification, you can present both documents - the IDL and your valid driver's license that will be in the appropriate language, or at least can be understood. Travel officials in Europe and other parts of the world state that International Driving License is advised for most countries. In many countries worldwide, you are unable to rent a car unless you have this document. While the IDL is not a requirement for driving in some countries, it is still great advantage for a motorist. Whether you travel on business, vacation or honeymoon travel, the International Drivers License is recommended by most countries, and mandated by many; for driving, and car or bike rental.

  2. For security cause a plastic card with a size of credit card accompanies the booklet, which also extends driver's identity information. To avoid any forgery - every plastic card is covered by our Security Shield Hologram which protects and prolongs the life of the card eliminating any possibility of counterfeiting. When driving in Europe there are a few things to keep in mind. Consider the following ten items;

1. Radar. The use or possession of radar detecting devices is illegal in most European countries. The penalties can be steep, including a fine, driving ban and even imprisonment. GPS systems that shows the location of fixed speed cameras are also illegal. Simply deactivate the "fixed speed camera" function.

2. Tunnel Safety. European tunnels can be quite long. The longest is the Laerdal tunnel in Norway which is 24.5km long. Before entering a tunnel be sure to check your fuel level, turn the radio to the traffic station and switch on your headlights. Pay very close attention to the speed of the  vehicles in front of you and if there is a sudden hold up, turn on your hazard lights. Keep a good distance from the vehicle in front of you and make a note of the safety equipment and facilities, like the emergency exits and phones.

3. Paperwork. Be sure to have all necessary documents to hand at all times including your  full  Drivers licence  (Provisional Driving Licences are not valid abroad)with paper counterpart if you have a photocard licence , International Driving Permit, International Drivers License (International Driving licence),motor insurance certificate and your passport. You may also need a visa when visiting certain countries.

4. More Paperwork. If the  vehicle  you are driving is borrowed, hired or leased,  you must take the V5 registration document with a letter from the owner authorising you to drive  it .

5. Crime. Keep purses and other items that would be easy to steal out of obvious view.  Always lock the doors and  never leave anything in an unattended car.

6. Credit. If you are planning on using a credit card for the trip and are relying on it, it is a good idea to check ahead of time if it is accepted in the countries you are visiting.  should they also make sure that there is a sufficiently high credit limit?

7. Mobile Phones. Do not use a mobile phone while driving. It is prohibited in many countries.

8. Reflective Jackets. Visiting motorists have to carry reflective jackets when traveling. It is recommended that there  is one jacket  per person kept in the passenger compartment.

9. Warning Triangle. It is also compulsory in many European countries to carry a warning triangle.

10. Most of important of all – make sure you have a European breakdown cover and that your motor insurance policy covers you for all of the countries that you will drive in.

There is special auto insurance for the drivers who want to commit the trip abroad. You must be covered in other country as well as you are in your own one. So it is not reasonable to go with your usual coverage because in different country the different conditions of the car insurance are possible.

Quite often those drivers who make up their minds to cross the border don’t want to put at risk their own vehicles. As a rule they prefer to rent a car. By the way in this case a driver needs the international driver license( international driver licence ) or international driver permit. You will be able to visit 150 countries having this kind of the permission ( international driver's license, international driver's licence, international driving permit). The data which is in your usual license( licence ) will be translated into 10 widely spread languages. Being stopped by the road police in the country you are visiting at the moment you will have a lot of troubles without the international driving license (international driving licence). The car insurance companies that can provide you with international drivers license(international drivers licence ) will put in front of you some special conditions. For example you will have to obtain a valid U.S license within 30-45 days.

You shouldn’t forget that the car insurance policy for the International Drivers is going to cover and to protect only the car but the driver. You can avoid such a situation if some friend of yours makes a call from the country you are going to visit and gives his or her agreement for adding you to his or her own car insurance policy. But this scheme work in case you decided to borrow you friend’s car. You must have at least a basic knowledge of the laws regulating car insurance in the foreign country you are going to visit. Besides the international drivers liscense ( international drivers liscence ) you will need the local valid driving license(valid driving licence).

If you decide to rent a car after you arrive the country you must obtain a special coverage for it. Of cause you can refer to your current car insurance provider but it would be better for you to get insurance from the company where your rental car is from. You must be ready for the situation that your own provide doesn’t have this type of coverage at its disposal.

New driving license( driver's licence) as a rule mean the new car insurance policy. Driving without the car insurance coverage is not only a dangerous thing for your future financial state it is illegal in any American or European country. You will have a lot of problems with the local law system. It is better to think it over in advance and to get your car properly insured for the period of your trip or visit abroad.

Anyone who is realistic about finding auto insurance must start from a simple step – go and gather auto insurance quotes all over the Internet. As much as you can.

There is a good network of well maintained highways and roads between major towns and most of the north-south route is dual carriageway. Road signs follow international standards and are in both English and Thai. Motorists drive on the left hand side of the road most of the time.

Heavy trucks dominate the main roads at night so night driving is not usually recommended as truck drivers in Thailand have little respect for cars. Tourist coaches often think they are driving Ferrari’s so be aware.

The maximum speed limit in cities and towns is 60km per hour and varies between 90 and 120km per hour on main and country road outside the city centers and the police apply regular speed checks. Seat belts are compulsory and drink drive laws apply which makes insurance invalid if drivers exceed the legal limit.

Speed limits:
Urban areas: 45 - 60kph/28 - 37 mph
Highway: 90 - 110kph/56 - 68 mph.

There are about 64 600 kms/40, 141mls of paved roads in Thailand as well as an extensive network of dirt roads (especially in the north). Major roads radiate outward from Bangkok to all major cities, with most of the north-south route consists of road. Interconnecting roads to smaller towns and cities are generally wide, and a single-lane two-lane sections on trade.

Parking in cities is usually in the street for a small fee or, for the most part, covered parking in the hotel / shopping plazas. More to the parking lot outside the city centers are generally free, if you can find a space. Do not block access government building or you are likely to be towed.

All kinds of fuel are readily available with petrol stations being in plentiful supply. Most of the larger ones will accept major international credit cards. In remote locations cash will be needed.

All drivers must hold a current, non-probationary license either Thai or from their own country but if it is not Thai or English they must carry an English translation or an International driving license(International driving licence). A valid passport must be carried at all times. You will need a Thai driver licence(driver's license) as opposed to an international drivers license (international drivers licence) once you have been in Thailand for more than 3 months.

If you get stopped by the police you will almost definitely get a fine of about B400, about £6, but if you are lucky it will be just B200, or £3. To get stopped you have done something wrong ‘maybe’ even if you don't know what it was! It is advisable to discreetly pay the money and never argue or lose your temper as it will cost your more.. Don’t expect a receipt for the money and you will never know if it is a genuine fine or whether it is being pocketed for that special occasion.

Be very wary of your speed and use every visual aid at your disposal, always check every direction before turning. Look well ahead on highways and one way streets they will come towards you on the wrong side for sure – heart stabilizing pills are a must. Unlike many Western countries, it is easy to pass a driving test here or even buy a license(licence), many of the drivers have little or no experience at all. This is changing with many checks and Police road blocks daily in the attempt to eradicate this problem but I fear it could take some time.

Since Thai motorists are notoriously ill-disciplined to give way or observation of traffic rules, motorists are advised to drive to a 'gentle pace' (50 kilometers or less) in urban areas. In the case of an accident, Thai perfer to resolve the legal outcome on the ground and often expect the wealthier motorist to absorb the cost, this includes foreigners.

Stay away from downtown Bangkok, traffic is terrible and the roads are confusing, to say nothing of road users who have a general disregard for other vehicles. Do not drive too close to the roadside on any road as motorcycles often enough to drive the wrong way, and stay out of the path of buses and trucks.

The roads in Greece vary in their quality and state of repair, with all major cities being connected by nice wide, multi-lane highways, and smaller cities being served by the narrow variety. To navigate to the most spectacular and remote locations you might have to negotiate through very narrow roads that might turn into gravel for large stretches of the trip often doubling the estimated time of arrival you calculated looking at the little red line on a map. Greece is a mountainous country and driving can yield spectacular views, but also it can be a cause for motion sickness. If you are traveling with small children make frequent stops and allow extra time to get to your destination.

Driving in Greece is not to be taken lightly. Greece has a very high accident rate compared to other European countries and much caution is advised. The most dangerous roads are the one lane roads which connect large cities and host large tractor trailers, small cars, older cars, and even smaller motorcycles, all driving at wide ranges of speed. Be extra careful when you pass slower vehicles and have to cross over to the opposite direction lane . There is no avoiding this maneuver on Greek roads especially if you are stuck behind a slow moving tractor trailer on a long uphill for the last 24 minutes. Maybe it's the pressure of 48 Greek drivers tailgating you cursing and waving frantically in your mirrors, maybe it's the need to get to where you are going sometime this century, or maybe it's your own latent Spartan warrior deep down inside who tends to awaken when you drive uphill behind a tractor trailer with 48 Greek drivers behind you, maybe all these reasons will compel you to forget all your ideas about defensive driving and pass the darn truck even if it is the last thing you would ever do.

Another dangerous maneuver in Greece is the dreaded left turn on any road. Chances are good that whoever follows behind you at double your speed is busy lighting a cigarette or fiddling with his stereo all while he is calculating the physics of passing you on the left without hitting the oncoming traffic and analyzing his trajectory to allow his wheels to avoid the two pot holes on the street. Naturally the last thing he has noticed is your left blinker that has been flashing frantically for 5oo meters, or your brake lights that you have been pumping frantically hoping that the driver behind you will notice and finally slow down. After driving in Greece for a long time I have come to the conclusion that turn signals fail in this way one time too often, so in addition to turning them on early, I extend my entire arm out the window pointing to the left for at least 200 meters. That seems to take care of the driver directly behind, but it has no effect on the ones behind him, but, hey, what's life without a little stress.

Minimum Age: Drivers must be 18.

Seat Belts: Must be used by front-seat passengers. With Greece's high accident rate, please, everybody, strap yourself in.

Children: Kids under 10 can't sit in the front seat.

Speed Limits Use these as a guide, but always obey the posted limits, which may vary.
Urban areas: 30 mph/50 kmh
Outside cities: 68 mph/110 kph
Freeways/Expressways: 75 mph/120 kph

Horning: Technically, it's illegal in towns and urban areas except in case of emergencies. Use it freely if needed; it could save your life. On high mountain roads, I always make a short beep shortly before going around a blind curve.

Driving in the Middle of the Road This is very common, especially on narrow roads, and is not necessarily a bad idea if you are expecting to have to avoid a sudden obstruction such as rockfalls, grazing goats, or an unexpected parked car. One Greek woman explained it to me by saying "If I'm driving in the middle, I always have someplace to go". But it is very disconcerting to see a car barreling toward you well over the middle line.

Parking: Forbidden (though it may not be marked) within 9 feet of a fire hydrant, 15 feet of an intersection, or 45 feet from a bus stop.

In some areas, street parking requires purchase of a ticket from a booth. These areas will usually be posted in both English and Greek.

Moving Violation Tickets Fines are expensive, often hundreds of euros. With Greece's current financial crisis, enforcement rates will probably rise.

Driver's Licenses: EU citizens can use their own. Other nationals should have an International Drivers License, though in practice, a recognizable photo license is usually accepted.

USA drivers license is valid in Greece, and it should be accompanied by an International Driver's Permit.

The International Driving Permit is an official translation of your valid Drivers License into 10 different languages, and they are valid for one year from the date issued. You can obtain an International Driving Permit from your local AAA for $10, or from ATAA. All you need is your valid US Drivers License, the completed application, two passport size photos (often taken on the spot at the AAA office), and you must be over 18 years old. You can go to your local AAA office, and the whole process takes about 10-15 minutes, or you can obtain your permit by mail.

Roadside Assistance: ELPA offers coverage to members of AAA (Triple-A), CAA and other similar assistance services but any driver can contact them. Check with your membership department for information on using the ELPA shared services in Greece.

ELPA has quick-access numbers dialable in Greece: 104 and 154.

Athens Restricted Area: The central Athens area restricts car access to reduce congestion, based on whether or not the car license plate ends in an odd or even number, but these restrictions do not apply to rental cars.

Driving Your Own Car: You need a valid registration, proof of internationally valid insurance (check beforehand with your insurance company!), and your driver's license.

Circles and Roundabouts: While these are standard in many European countries and in the UK and Ireland, they are new to many US drivers. These circles serve as a kind of perpetual-motion intersection, keeping traffic flowing without the use of signal lights. This sounds more difficult than it actually is, and roundabouts are actually kind of fun once you get used to them.

Cell Phone Usage It is now illegal to use your cell phone while driving in Greece. Violators can be stopped and issued a fine. Periodic crackdowns are driving this point home.

If you're traveling to an English-speaking country, chances are you'll be able to get by with an American driver's license.

However, many other countries will ask that you also obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is basically just a piece of paper that translates your information into 10 different languages and is recognized by over 150 countries.

If you are planning to rent a car abroad, you may be asked to present one along with your regular state license. You must be at least 18 years old to get an IDP.

To obtain one, go down to your local AAA with two passport photos (with your signature on the back of each) and a copy of your state-issued license.

You will be asked to pay a fee of $15 for a one-year issue and fill out an application, which can be printed online beforehand if you want to get a head start.

If you can't get to a local office or would rather apply by mail, print and complete the application and send it with two signed passport photos, your $15 payment and a photocopy of both sides of your driver's license to:

AAA/IDP
1000 AAA Drive
Heathrow, FL 32746
Attn: Mailstop #28

Beware of phony IDP's! Only two agencies in the U.S. are authorized to issue IDP's: the American Automobile Association and the American Automobile Touring Alliance.

Hundreds of Web sites sell fakes, many charging over $100, believe it or not. For more information or to locate the AAA nearest you, go to the official AAA Web site.

Be sure to get your IDP before leaving home, as it must be issued in your home country. An IDP is not a license itself, merely a translation of the license issued in your country of residence.

If you are stopped by law enforcement officials abroad, you must present both your IDP and your U.S. license.

The only driving record you have, therefore, is within the United States, so obey the local driving rules! Any infraction or citation issued abroad will be waiting for you when you return home.

Check with the consulate or embassy of the country you're visiting to find out their policies on international drivers.

International Driving Permits
Although many countries do not recognize U.S. driver's licenses, most countries accept an International Driving Permit (IDP).  IDPs are honored in more than 150 countries outside the United States.  (See AAA’s application form for the list of countries).  An IDP functions as an official translation of a U.S. driver's license into ten foreign languages.  These licenses are not intended to replace valid U.S. state licenses and should only be used as a supplement to a valid U.S. license.  IDPs are not valid in an individual’s country of residence. Before departure, you can obtain an IDP from an automobile association authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs.  Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on Road Traffic (1949) authorizes the U.S. Department of State to empower certain organizations to issue IDPs to those who hold valid U.S. driver’s licenses.  The Department designated the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance as the only authorized distributors of IDPs.

Many foreign countries require the deposit of a customs duty or an equivalent bond for each tourist automobile entering their territory, and the motoring associations are equipped with the necessary facilities to expeditiously provide a standard bond document (Article 3 of the Convention).  The Convention is not applicable to United States motorists using their cars in the United States.

How to Apply for an International Driving Permit:
Before departure, you can obtain an IDP at a local office of one of the two automobile associations authorized by the U.S. Department of State: the American Automobile Association and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (through the National Auto Club).

According to the travel agency, international drivers license (international driving licence or international drivers permit) should have been recognized as a valid document for driving.

Unfortunately, when we arrived in Grenada, we were required to purchase a Grenadian driving permit, because they wouldn't honor the AAA document. Grenada requires you to buy what it calls a "local driving permit" for EC $30, according to the country's official tourism. Driving in Grenada is similar to the English system, where driving is on the LEFT. To obtain a local driving permit, a bona fide driver's license must be presented at the traffic department at the Central Police Station on the Carenage. The cost is EC$30.00 or roughly £7. Most car rental firms also issue local permits.

Grenada's diverse and colorful people embrace visitors to their special island. Touring and hiking through the spectacular capital city of St. George's, along the Carenage, the semi-circular roadway sweeps around the bay reflecting the red-roofed colonial city. Local craft and spice shops mingle with international restaurants, museums, and Market Square, the gathering place for buying and selling produce and spices.

Entry Documents:
Beginning January 2007, US citizens need a passport for all travel to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada.

Proof of citizenship in the form of a passport or a photo ID with a birth certificate or voter's registration card for US, Canadian or British citizens and a return or ongoing ticket. Other countries require a passport or visa.
Airport:
 Point Salines International Airport
Departure Tax:
 US$19
Driving:
On the left - A valid driver's license must be presented for a permit. Permit costs around US$12.

International Driving License

Even if you don't intend to drive when you travel overseas you should always carry an International Driving Permit.

An International Driving Permit (IDP) or International translation of drivers license is a requirement for renting a motor vehicle in many countries and is helpful for tourists who find themselves in need of identification or assistance.

An IDP provides inexpensive additional security.
    IDPs are officially sanctioned by the United Nations and accepted worldwide (in over 150 countries) as a recognisable form of identification;
    Your IDP carries your identification details in nine languages (English, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Italian, German, Arabic, Swedish and French), in case you need to communicate with foreign authorities;
    In some countries you may be asked to surrender your passport under certain circumstances. An IDP provides an extra photo ID in nine languages which you can always carry with you;
    IDPs are a special permit for tourists, authorised by a United Nations Treaty for the purpose of allowing motorists to drive internationally without further tests or applications provided their domestic drivers licence is valid;
    An IDP is proof that you hold a valid drivers licence in your home country at the date of issue of the IDP and should be carried with your domestic drivers licence;
A valid IDP permits you to drive in most foreign countries in case of an emergency under normal IDP conditions.

IDPs are issued through State and Territory Motoring Clubs. All you need to do is take a copy of your current drivers licence into your local club with a passport size photo and fill out an application form.

You will need an official passport photo, scanned photo or digital photo (printed on proper photographic paper) no more than 12 months old to accompany the application.

India can't issue International Driving Permits, permits are issued by the respective countries. Insted you have to order International Driving License or international translation of driving licence.

Transport department can issue Driving Licence for Driving in India(he has indian residency) then you can be issued International Driving Permit.Atleast the link says so.Talk to the Transport office where your licence was issued.  Driving License and driving permit are not the same. Driving license gives you the authority to drive a kind of vehicle clearly mentioned in the license. It is issued for driving that particular kind of vehicle, i.e. with a driving license authorizing you to ride "MotorCycles with gear" does not authorize you to drive "Light Motor Vehicles".

Permit is issued by local governing body authorizing you to reach and roam around in certain places mentioned in the permit by whatever modes of transport, be it walking, biking, riding or driving. For example: Indian Government can issue you a Driving License to drive in India but can't issue a permit to roam around in Nepal. That permit/visa you will have to take from Nepal Government/Competent Authority.

AFAIK upon entering Nepal you will be issued a temporary registration number for your vehicle (maybe a temp DL too, not sure). And as Shamik has pointed out, if you show an Australian Passport along with an Indian DL it will only complicate the matter. Best is to contact the Nepal Consulate and sort out all things with them, if possible in writing.

International Driver’s License is an official translation of a national or domestic driver's license, which allows the motorist to drive in different territories without experiencing difficulties with various language barriers. This International Driver’s License, however, is valid only with the original driver's license, which must be currently valid and not suspended or expired. The International Drivers License also indicates that you are a holder of a valid drivers license from your country, fulfiling the right for a person to drive in another country when accompanied by an original and valid driver's license.

Most people have no trouble driving the main roads of Greece, and there are main roads leading to all of the major tourist destinations.

Driving

As with any large city there are government rules and regulations and one of the most important Greece travel tips involves driving. If you plan on transporting yourself and your family around town, you do need to know what’s required before you get behind the wheel. For example, children under 10 aren’t allowed in the front seat and seat belts must be worn by front seat passengers and driver. Seat belts must be worn by children in the back seat. You may use your national license but in some cases, an international driving permit or international translation of driver’s licence is required. Be aware that Greece has the highest car accident rate in Greece. If you're an inexperienced driver, Greece's roads may not be for you. Car rental fees and gas are both expensive, especially from a USA-based perspective. Greece is a mountainous country, and many roads will be curvy. In late fall and winter, they may be wet, snowy, or icy

Visitors and not residents of Greece who plan to drive should secure the necessary documents to avoid being denied car rental or fined/detained by police.

EU citizens: If you’re an EU citizen, the license from your home country is perfectly fine as long as it hasn’t expired.

Americans: If you have a valid American license, an International Driving Permit (IDP) from one of two issuing authorities in Canada and the USA — AAA or AATA — is necessary and must be secured before leaving home by downloading the online form and submitting it in person or by mail. An IDP is not an international driver’s license; it is essentially a translation of your normal license, which is the reason it requires no tests, is only good while you’re a tourist.

Car rental agencies should ask for both a valid unexpired driver’s license and an IDP before renting scooters or vehicles; those who do not are bending the law.

Canadians: If is a Canadian citizen visiting Greece, the Embassy recommends securing an International driving Permit.

Other non-EU citizens: Check with your embassy before leaving home.

International driving permits and U.S. drivers' licenses are not valid in Vietnam.  Foreigners renting vehicles risk prosecution and/or imprisonment for driving without a Vietnamese license endorsed for the appropriate vehicle.  Non-Vietnamese citizens who wish to drive in Vietnam should contact any office of the Provincial Public Transportation Service of the Vietnamese Department of Communications and Transport to obtain a Vietnamese driver's license.

Vietnamese Driving Licences are mandatory for all drivers of motor vehicles as well as for riders of motorcycles with a capacity of over 50 cc. Non-Vietnamese citizens are only permitted to drive in Vietnam if they hold a temporary Vietnamese Driver’s License ( driving licence ).

To convert your Driving Licence or International Driving Permit or international translation of driver's license into a temporary Vietnamese Driver’s licence, the applicant must first hold a valid Vietnamese residence permit or visa of at least three month’s validity and a valid Driving Licence.

Traffic in Vietnam is chaotic.  Traffic accidents occur frequently and the most common victims are motorbike riders and pedestrians.  At least 30 people die each day from transportation-related injuries and many more are injured, often with traumatic head injuries.

Traffic accident injuries are the leading cause of death, severe injury, and emergency evacuation of foreigners in Vietnam. Traffic accidents, including those involving a pedestrian and a motorized vehicle, are the single greatest health and safety risk Non-Vietnamese  citizens will face in Vietnam

Australia is a developed country with roads that are well-signed, well-paved and easy to navigate. The driving rules across the eight states are essentially similar, with Melbourne having an extra few.

Driving Etiquette and Rules

  • Left-hand drive
  • Seat belts and child restraints must be worn by ALL passengers
  • Overcrowding is illegal. Everyone has to be properly seated so sedans would fit a maximum of 5 people
  • Drivers in Australia are generally considerate and law-abiding. Always give way to pedestrians and follow the speed limits
  • In general, if there are no signs, the default speed limit on urban/built-up roads is 50km/h and 100km/h for all others
  • Unless there is a dedicated turn light (or the signs say otherwise), you are allowed to make a left/right turn when the light for going straight ahead is green. It is then your responsibility to wait until all pedestrians have finished crossing and that there are no oncoming cars before you take your turn
  • Using a handheld mobile to talk or SMS is subject to heavy fines. A hands-free kit or speaker phone is permitted but not recommended as it can still impair your concentration

Drivers License Requirements

  • As a temporary visitor, you can drive on your existing overseas licence
  • Always have a copy of your driver’s licence. If it’s not in English, you should have an official translation or an International Driving Permit or International translation of drivers license
  • Carry some sort of evidence that you are a genuine visitor e.g. tourist visa, letter from educational institutions, employers or diplomatic offices

Minorca (Menorca both in Catalan and Spanish;  - situated east of Mallorca - is one of Spain’s own Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea.

Menorca Driving Advice

European Union citizens (18 years or older) must own a national driving license to drive in Menorca, however non-European Union citizens (18 years or older) also need an International Driving Permit or International drivers license as well. Both types of citizens must have car insurance and identification (license, passport, etc.) by law, is required at all times. Seat belts must be worn by all passengers, and travelers under the age of 14 must be seated in the back seat of the vehicle. When driving, remember that driving positions are reversed to American drivers. You must yield to on-coming traffic from junctures and traffic circles. Driving speeds are generally restricted to 30 mph (in urban areas) to 56 mph (on major routes).

Special care should be taken to restrict your driving to the main routes outlined on the most recent maps of this area as other routes may not be appropriate for driving (dirt roads, mountain passes, etc.).

Traveling in Menorca by Car / Car Rental

Because Menorca’s city centers are so popular, you are cautioned to avoid driving in these areas - especially since the narrow roads in these places can accommodate traffic traveling in one direction only. In addition, parked automobiles make driving extremely difficult. Traveling by car rental is best accomplished by following a current map of its roads - which offer views that are nothing short of amazing. Every Car Hire in association with Auto Europe provides discounted car rental with leading rental companies such as Hertz, Alamo, Budget and Europcar. Most rental companies simply require a valid driver's license from your home country to rent a vehicle. It's wise to obtain an International Driver Permit or International driving licence, just to play it safe. The permit, issued in your home country, translates your license to make it understandable to foreign officials. Also you can order international translation of drivers license at www.idlicense.com

1. Some African countries require you to have an International Driving Licence ( International drivers license ) - check the requirements with the embassy in your country, or the car hire company before you leave.

2. If at all possible avoid driving at night. It can be very dangerous in Africa. Roads can be poorly lit, in bad condition and it’s common for other drivers to drive without their lights on.

3. Beware of the Cow or Sheep. In many countries, and particularly in rural areas, roads are poorly maintained, it’s fairly common to come across domestic animals such as sheep and cattle.

4. Africa is immense. Drunk drivers are not uncommon and be very watchful for drunk pedestrians. Police are scarce.

5. Laws vary from country to country in Africa, some countries require you to always carry hazard triangles, have reflectors (a white sticker on your bumper), wear seat belts etc, whilst others do not. Ensure you know all the legal requirements for driving a vehicle in the country you are travelling to.

6. When travelling through Africa it almost a certainty that you will come across a road block. If you do not abide by the laws of the country, then sure enough and you will be fined - this can be costly! Ignorance is no defence in the eyes of the law, just like the UK.

7. If stopped at a roadblock, be courteous and responsive to questions asked by persons in authority.

8. In areas of instability and unrest avoid travelling at night.

9. Ensure that your passport is stamped when crossing borders, if not, then you will have a huge problem when you come to leave the country.

10. If you are stopped at night, turn on the interior light of your vehicle. Make sure that the person you are dealing with is an official and ask them for their identity card. If they cannot provide it - do not pay any fines - ask to be taken to the local police station.

Self driving in Perth, Australia is not too difficult. Their cars are right hand drive with cars driven on the left lane, same as per Malaysia and Singapore. All you need is a valid driving license and you could drive in Australia. No need to apply for an international driving license (international drivers licence). Being in an unfamiliar place you will need a driver and a navigator to move around effortlessly. If the driver also has to navigate, then the best course of action would be to rent a car with GPS unit. It would of course mean additional rental amount. The first time driving in Perth was of course a total blur being completely unfamiliar. With Catherine around we just followed her car to an Italian restaurant for dinner somewhere in Northbridge.

While driving, cars must always give priority to pedestrians which where unlike Malaysia where drivers were like Mr Hyde and pedestrians have to be wary about crossing the road lest they be knocked down. Speed limit in Perth was 50 kilometres per hour unless otherwise signposted. Upper freeway speed limit was 100kph, while upper limit in country areas was 110kph. In some places, speed cameras were used to enforce speed limits. I saw some signpost between Perth and Fremantle where speed cameras were used and the speed limit was 60kph.

Difficult to understand the parking signboards . Their system was different from ours, they use a number to indicate how long you could park such as 1/2 P would meant you could only park for half an hour while 1P, 2P, 3P etc indicates 1 hour, 2 hours and 3 hours respectively. A ticket machine will dispense automatically the limit as per indicated on the signboard. A sign board with a S with a red slash inside a red circle indicates a no stopping zone. Public parking zones were cheaper than parking at private parking areas such as CPP or Wilson parking. However public parking zones has a time limit as per indicated on the signage which meant you have to get back to your car to get a new set of tickets or drive the car away. Not very convenient if you plan to hang around for a while in that place.

To drive legally in New Zealand, you need to be over age 15 and have a driving licence. This must be either a valid New Zealand driving licence, an international driving permit, or an international driver's license licence. You must carry it whenever you drive.

If you have a driving licence from your home country, or an international driving permit, it is valid for 12 months in New Zealand. After that, you will need to apply for a New Zealand driving licence.

Forms to apply for an overseas licence conversion are available from several agencies, including Land Transport New Zealand and the New Zealand Automobile Association. To convert your foreign driving licence to a New Zealand one, you must learn the New Zealand road code. You will have to pass a theory test and, depending on the country you are from, pass a practical driving test as well. You can find out more from Land Transport New Zealand’s website.

You probably wouldn't need to take a practical since coming from UK you already drive on the left, NZ does have some strange rules tho, such as you must give way to anyone crossing your path from the right.

Cheap buses are main forms of public transport on Bali, minibuses and bemos (a general term for any vehicle that is used as a public transport which is normally a minibus or van with a row of low seats on each side). They normally run on somewhat set routes within or between towns. Having your own transport can be arranged; there are cars, motorbikes, and bicycles for rent. Tourist shuttle buses that run between major tourist centres are more expensive than public transport but are definitely more comfortable and convenient.

Charter vans or mini buses can be rented at a reasonable cost including petrol and a driver/guide. These are great for parties of 6 or more. Motorcycles are a popular way to get around Bali. If you decide to rent one, drive slowly and defensively. The cost of hiring a motorcycle is negotiable and varies according to the condition of the machine, length of rental and time of year. Buying insurance is a good idea to avoid being responsible for damages, but be sure to test-drive the motorbike to see that everything is in good working order. A valid International Driving LIcense ( international drivers licence) is required or if you forget it you can spend a morning at the Denpasar Police Office to obtain a temporary permit, which lasts for three months, but the process can be a huge hassle. It would be wise to get an International Driving Permit in your own country before you leave home.

Seeing Bali by bicycle has become increasingly popular in recent years and the quality of rental bikes has improved. Some airlines will carry your own bike for free if you would prefer to bring one with you. The most common bikes offered are mountain bikes as their low gear ratios and softer tyres are better suited to Bali.

For something different hop on a traditional dokar. These small horse-drawn carts are still available in Kuta and Denpasar and a short ride costs next to nothing. It’s a novel, if somewhat slow, way to view the passing scenery and is always popular with children.

A helicopter ride is the experience of a lifetime. What better way to fully appreciate every contour, mountain and valley on this wonderfully picturesque tropical island than from the air. Trips vary from long to short and it’s a good way to transverse the island..

If you're moving to another country or even traveling overseas to scope out the prospects of a move, it's a good idea to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) with you, even if you won't be driving. It provides an extra piece of photo ID and you never know when you might need to rent a car or drive a friend's.  According to the American Automotive Association (AAA), this card is recognized by over 150 countries, and is a special license for tourists, authorized by a UN treaty, to allow motorists to drive vehicles in international traffic without any tests or applications. It is proof that the holder possesses a valid driver's license issued by their country of residence. Along with a photo ID, the International Driving Permit provides translation of your valid drivers license and is printed in in 10 languages: English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, German, Arabic, Italian, Scandinavian and Portuguese. Most Car Rental agencies will request an IDP even though one is not required to drive in their country. For more information or to apply for an IDP, contact your local AAA office (USA) or the CAA (Canada). Note that International Driver Licenses are available over the internet, but only the IDP obtained from a recognized source is valid and legal. Once you've made a permanent move, you'll need to investigate how to obtain a license for your new home country. Before you leave, check with the embassy or consulate of the country where you will be moving to to learn about requirements for driver's license, road permits, and auto insurance. You should also learn the rules of the road for that particular country and keep in mind that road conditions and road safety varies. Find out about road signs and the laws and penalties associated with a traffic violation. Know all the rules

Tips for Driving In a Foreign Country

  • Obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP).
  • Carry both your IDP and your state driver's license with you at all times.
  • As many countries have different driving rules, obtain a copy of the foreign country’s rules before you begin driving in that country. Information may be available from the foreign embassy in the United States, foreign government tourism offices or from a car rental company in the foreign country.
  • Check the minimum and maximum driving age.
  • Check road permits that you may need to use their divided highways.
  • Always "buckle up." Some countries have penalties for people who violate this law.
  • Many countries require you to honk your horn before going around a sharp corner or to flash your lights before passing.
  • Find out who has the right of way in a traffic circle.
  • If you rent a car, make sure you have liability insurance.
  • If the drivers in the country you are visiting/moving to drive on the opposite side of the road, it may be prudent to practice driving in a less populated area before attempting to drive during heavy traffic.
  • Always know the route you will be traveling. Have a copy of a good road map, and chart your course before beginning.
  • Do not pick up hitchhikers or strangers.
  • When entering your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings.

The Appia Antica is open to scooter and automobile traffic. Vendors will tell you that Scooters are allowed into most ZTL areas and pretty much everywhere except "pedestrian only" zones. For some Romans this includes sidewalks & crosswalks! I've never received a summons for riding a scooter in a ZTL. That said, the Appia Antica is closed to ALL traffic (including scooters) on Sundays, as it becomes a pedestrian only walkway. Note that riding a scooter on Appia Antica is like riding a waverunner - the dips and potholes on the old cobblestone road could loosen your fillings! We've taken that ride many times on our scooter(s).  If you're renting a scooter in Rome I would caution you. Having previous motorcycle experience is very helpful. Also, do not get an underpowered scooter. For two people, rent a 125cc which is the largest you can drive in Italy without an Italian motorcycle license. You'll need the 125cc horsepower to get out of trouble and up some of the hills! Get one with a "bauletto" (storage box for 2nd helmet) and windshield. If you've never ridden a bike before, Rome IS PROBABLY NOT the place to learn! And even those with experience often shake their heads at Roman drivers. The biggest challenges seem to be other motorini drivers, taxis, buses, potholes, rough roads, people in crosswalks, confusing signage, and cars - in that order!!!!

Depending on the season and the vendor, rentals usually start around E50 a day for a 125cc. Some vendors will ask for an IDP (International Drivers Permit) but most do not... If you have an "incidente" you'd better have an IDP! If you Google Rome scooters you will see many, many vendors!

Renting a car is an option worth considering if you plan to explore rural Japan, where access by public transportation can be inconvenient and infrequent. A rental car can also be an economical alternative, if traveling in groups.

Exploring Japan's big cities by car, however, is not recommended, as traffic tends to be heavy, orientation difficult, and parking fees high. Trains, subways and buses are generally a better choice in metropolitan areas.

Elsewhere on the site are pages on driving in Japan and Japanese highways.

Requirements

In order to rent and drive a car in Japan, a Japanese driver's license or an international driving permit is required. In the case of French, German and Swiss nationals an official translation of your home country's driver's license is accepted.

International driving permits must be obtained in your home country, usually through the national automobile association, before you leave for Japan. Foreigners can drive in Japan with a recognized international driving permit for up to one year after entering the country.

Japan recognizes only international driving permits which are based on the Geneva Convention of 1949. A few countries, including Belgium, France, Germany and Switzerland, however, issue international driving permits which are based on different conventions. Those permits are not valid in Japan.

Instead, holders of a French, German or Swiss driver's license can drive in Japan, for up to one year, with an official Japanese translation of their driver's license from their respective country's embassy or consulate in Japan. People from other countries whose international driving permits are not recognized by Japan must obtain a Japanese driver's license in order to drive in Japan.

The minimum age for driving in Japan is 18 years.

Rental Companies

Among Japan's leading car rental companies are Toyota Rentacar, Mazda Rentacar, Nissan Rentacar, Nippon Rentacar and Orix Rentacar. They operate hundreds of outlets across Japan, offering cars in all sizes and, in some cases, large vans, buses and RVs.

Most Japanese car rental companies do not provide English websites, and service in English is not usually available.

International car rental companies such as Budget, Avis and Hertz also offer car rental in Japan, typically in cooperation with one of the leading Japanese car rental companies. However, their rates are usually not very competitive.

Japanese rental companies usually charge around 6000 yen for the smallest car category, around 10,000 yen for mid sized cars, and around 15,000 yen for full sized cars. Those prices include a mandatory insurance fee of around 1000 Yen per day. Rates are usually higher during peak seasons, especially in Hokkaido.

A recommended service for car rental in Japan is ToCoo. The discount travel service does not only offer lower rates on car rental, but also provides an English website and support in English

Do I need an International drivers license?
No. Anyone driving a motor vehicle in Sweden must hold a valid national (e.g. Cameroonian) driving license. In other words, an international driving permit is not enough on its own. You can drive 12 months here on your Cameroonian license.
Can I swap my Cameroonian or any other country's driving licence for a Swedish one?
No. Only those who hold a valid licence from an EEA country (such as: Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Germany, France, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Austria etc) can directly swap their licence.
What if I just drive more than a year on the Cameroonian driving licence?
It will cost you if you are caught and you may end up paying a huge fine or going to jail. And the phrase “I didn’t know that is was like that here” “i have been here for just a few months” won’t work with the police! Note that it will also annul the car insurance if you are driving and if you have an accident. It’s not worth a try!!
How do I get a Swedish licence?
Well, it’s fairly straightforward, if somewhat expensive. There are three tests that you must pass to obtain a Swedish driving license:

1. The slippery road test (halkbana),

2. The written theory test, and

3. The driving test.

These tests must be taken in the order that they appear and, contrary to what you may have heard, it is possible to pass each test the first time around--even if you don’t speak Swedish!

Details of the forms needed are available here: Swedish_Driving_Permit_form.pdf (353.82 kb)

The first step before getting your drivers license is to apply for permission to practice driving. Call Vägverket and ask them to send you an application that will allow you to practice driving with your spouse, partner, or friend. Once you have written permission to practice, you must buy a green “övningskörning” (practice driving) sticker from a petrol station and place it on the back of your car whenever you are driving. In the back of the pamphlet you receive from Vägverket is a card that must be signed by your instructor and stamped by the slippery road test facility

Do I need a driving school?
You don’t have to attend a driving school, but doing so is highly recommended since getting a Swedish driving license is a very complicated procedure. You are not required to take any courses at a driving school as long as you have someone who can be your "private instructor" (handledare) who has had a Swedish license for more than 5 years, but it is recommended. Why? Well, many driving schools offer theory courses (mostly in Swedish) and textbooks, pre-tests, and driving lessons (in English). Call around to compare costs and to see what they have to offer in English. For a list of all driving schools approved by the National Association of Swedish Driving Schools, see the website at Sveriges Trafikskolors Riksförbund. The school will also prepare you for the slippery road, theory, and driving tests. Here is some information about each test:

Halkbana: (slippery road testing)

This course takes about 4 hours for driving school students and 4½ hours for private students. The training consists of both theory and practical exercises in driving in slippery or hazardous road conditions. You'll receive a booklet in the mail after you've received an appointment, detailing the different exercises. Your task will be to show the driving inspector that you know how to handle your car on an icy road. You will be asked, for example, to step on your brakes going 80-100 kilometers per hour and then regain control of your car. Active participation, following the given instructions, completing the exercises at the required speeds and not abusing the vehicles is basically all that's required to pass the training. Your successfully-completed training will remain valid for two years. You will not receive any certificate or other paperwork; rather, they inform Vägverket that you have completed the training and it is noted in their computers. If you don't understand Swedish well, you'll need to arrange to bring your own interpreter with you.

Theory test
The theory test is computerized and consists of 70 questions. Of these, 65 are 'counted' and you must get 52 right. You don’t need to be computer literate to take this test, and you can request it in English. The test focuses on the practical points of driving. In preparing for the theory test, you must purchase a textbook and take about 14 pre-tests. Textbooks in English are available. Most schools are currently translating the new pre-tests into English. After you have passed all the pre-tests, the school will then schedule a time for you to take the theory test at Vägverket. You can obtain "Passing Your Driving Test" from Sveriges Trafikskolors Riksförbund or from your driving school.

Driving test
The driving test takes around 45 minutes. Even if you have many years of driving experience, it is still a good idea to drive with an instructor from a driving school before taking the final driving test. Why? Because Vägverket’s inspectors have high standards, and they will expect you to follow certain rules. The driving instructors know exactly what the inspectors will be looking for during the test and can thus prepare you in advance. The instructors will also teach you how to perform three additional mini-tests relating to your car: an engine check, an inside car check, and a light check (you will be asked to perform one of these three tests before your final driving test begins). After you have driven once or maybe several times with an instructor and have demonstrated that you are ready to take the final driving test, the school will then schedule a test time at Vägverket. Ask your instructor to go with you during the final test to translate if necessary.

What does it cost?
What can I say, it’s EXPENSIVE! There are fees along every step of this process. There are separate costs for your driving permit, the eye examination required for the driving permit, your theory study materials, the theory test, the driving test, the manufacturing of your driver's license, the slippery road training, hire of car for the halkbana test, driving lessons, use of a double-control car for the driving test and the photos for your license. Expect to pay at least 5000 Sek and more (and even more depending on if and how many driving lessons you take) for the whole process.

Where can I find schools etc?
The telephone books list plenty of driving schools under the heading "Trafikskolor". Slippery Road Test locations: Look for "Halkbanor" or "trafikövningsplatser" in the yellow pagesGula sidornaor eniro.se for a slippery road test range nearest you. For a complete list of all of Vägverkets testing locations, see Vägverkets homepage.

Bilprovning
Cars are annually tested for roadworthy at Bilprovning. These tests are compulsory. You can book a time on the internet, but allow plenty of time ahead to make an appointment for the test, which takes around 20 minutes or so to complete. It covers the exhaust system, the braking system, the front and rear suspension, tyres and steering system, and wheel housings to check, headlights, indicators, front and rear lights, wipers, horn and rear view mirrors. The inspection fee for a car is currently 300 SEK. If the car is failed, the re-inspection fee is 200 SEK.

Alternatively, you can drive in Indonesia (as a resident) on an international driver's license. In the US, there are only two agencies that can issue valid US IDPs. Other organizations issuing them are not issuing official US State Department sanctioned permits. Now, that is not to say that Indonesian officials will know this or won't accept the other permits.

SKLD (Certificate of Police Registration)
The SKLD (Surat Keterangan Lapor Diri) is issued by the Direktorat Intelpam Sub Direktorat Pengawasan Orang Asing of the National Police. This is an important document and you should carry a photocopy with you at all times. Before the issuance of the SKLD, you need a STM. The STM is a resort police report acknowledging your residence, which is issued by the resort police office nearest your residence.

Population Documents
Expatriates are required to obtain several documents from the local municipality's population office. Once you have established yourself in your place of residence you must report your presence to the local neighborhood head, klian banjar. You should keep copies of all your relevant immigration documents at your home, just incase you are caught in an occasional "sweeping" check of expat documents.

These are relatively routine operations that are conducted periodically and are not an effort to harass or otherwise inconvenience the foreign community. They are usually checking for people who are here illegally. If you are here legally and have the documents to prove it there is nothing to fear. If you are approached or threatened by suspicious persons, try to get their names, affiliations and contact numbers.

A Travelling permit or SKJ - Surat Keterangan Jalan means travelling permit in Indonesia. It is required by the police office in the event that you want to visit a work location outside of the island of Java.

The driver's license will have a digital photograph on it and will look similar to the picture on the right. Obtaining a Dubai Driver's Permit
The procedures of obtaining a driver's permit in Dubai have constantly been changing, and the procedures currently being followed, as of April 2003, are described below.

Before you decide to get a driver's permit, you should first decide which driving institute you wish to take driving lessons with. Driving institutes in Dubai can be grouped into two types, which are described below.

Type A - These driving institutes are large institutes and there are less than 5 of them in Dubai. Initially a driving student needs to sign up with the driving institute and pay for the number of classes he/she will take, before beginning training. The student will also have scheduled lesson timings that has to be followed, and if a student misses a certain number of classes, then the classes will be cancelled without a refund. Most of these institutes have a typing office and eye test facilities, which will facilitate obtaining your driver's permit. Students are also able to take road tests normally taken at the Dubai Traffic Department, inside the institute.

Type B - These smaller driving institutes are the most common in Dubai. The student can request lessons from the driving institute's instructor whenever he/she has available time. The instructor will come to the driving student's residence in order for him/her to take driving lessons.

So if you chosen to undergo driving classes with a Type B driving institute, then it is very important to read through the following information. It is no longer possible to obtain the driving licence application form from the Dubai Police Traffic Departments, so you will need to pick one up from any driving institute near you. After obtaining the application form, you will then need to gather together 4 passport size photographs (4cm x 6cm), your original passport (which is only used for inspection) and a photocopy of it (main and visa pages), 'No Objection Letter' from your sponsor (indicating that they don't object that you apply for a driver's license), and either a photocopy of your sponsor's passport or your company's trade license. When obtaining the 'No Objection Letter' from your sponsor, you should have him/her sign and stamp in the required place on the application form. Then take the application form and the other items down to any typing office in Dubai and have them fill out the form in Arabic using a typewriter, as the Dubai Traffic Deptartment will not accept applications written by hand. The filled form should then be taken to any UAE government hospital, or any private hospital, clinic, or optical centre in Dubai for an eye examination. The eye examiner will fill out the necessary place on the back of the form and stamp it. The eye exam/test should cost around Dhs. 25. Lastly, you can submit your application form and other items to Mr. Ibrahim Koya of Marhaba Motor Driving Institute by contacting him at 050-4564708. If you decide to undergo training at another drivinging institute, then submit the items to that driving institute so that they can take them down to the Dubai Traffic Dept. for the issuing of the permit. A fee of Dhs. 100 should be submitted with the filled application form. The driving permit is valid for one year and will cost Dhs. 40 for it to be renewed.

Fancy a holiday in Dubai? It could be an easy way to obtain a legally valid second drivers liencse (driving licence)

This is a new policy introduced following a recent change in the law which requires tourists wishing to rent a car to have either a valid International Driving Permit, or a local Duba licence.

Tourists who do not already have an international driving permit, can apply for a temporary UAE driving licence at RTA branches located either at the City Centre in Deira or the Union Co-operative in Al Tawar, instead of going to the RTA head office in Rashidiya. Both branches are open from 9am to 9pm, Sunday to Thursday.

When applying, tourists must present their passports, eye test results, driving licences of the countries of their origin, and Dh110 as application fee. A temporary UAE driving licence is issued the same day.

There is one catch: this licence can be issued only to the nationals of European countries, the US, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore, South Korea and Japan.

When thinking about traveling some considerations should be taken. First you have to think about the distance of your journey and how far you will be going as well as how long. Secondly, research the weather conditions for both arriving and departing from your destinations. For instance, if you are on your way from Florida to California you would not want to take a train during hurricane season, Therefore, the importance of weather and distance are two big factors.

For shorter trips like Georgia to Florida, a train or an automobile can be taken into consideration. When planning a trip using an airline, think about the different airlines to use because some airports have fewer flights and fewer delays than their larger airports. Another tip is always to confirm your reservations in advance just in case, and you should also make sure that you pack light, but always remember the essential items. For example, be extra keen on packing underwear, hygienic items and any medications and put them in your carryon bag, while the rest of your items go in your check in luggage.

See if you can get an International Drivers License when traveling remote out of your own country, which is a license allowing the bearer to operate a motor vehicle in another country where he or she is visiting. An international driver’s license will be more readily acknowledged than your locally issued driver’s authorization. The cost is not exorbitant and in most places, these licenses are easier to obtain by just showing your country’s driver’s license. Take snacks along on your trip in case you need any because you may get stuck on a runway and there is no food. In some instances, some airlines don’t serve food and most trains and buses don’t make stops frequently.

Double check to make sure you have cash, proper identification, credit cards, schedule, e-ticket or paper ticket before you leave your home. If traveling out of the country you must not forget your passport. Go through your purse or bag to make certain there are no sharp objects that might be construed as weapons as well as liquids in your carry on, which is not allowed.

For airports, arrive two hours before your flight and be at the gate up to 35 minutes before boarding. Doing this ensures that your trip will be smooth and hassle free, if your flight is overbooked and you reach there early, you will be one of the first to know if there are any delays or cancellation. In conclusion those are some basic tips in traveling that you can rely upon at all times, but keep in mind that the airport rules change from time to time, so be mindful of that and be safe whether 10 miles or 1000 miles these tips apply.

Provided your home country licence includes your photo and signature and is in one of S.A.'s official languages, there is no legal requirement for an international drivers license.

The official SA language list includes English, so that covers US, Australian and UK licenses and many others. Even non-English licences are OK, provided there is an attached translation by a "competent authority" (whatever that may be).

Of course, if you are pre-booking your car rental, it’s worth asking your specific car hire company if they have different requirements from the norm – that avoids hassle and stress when you get to them! Sometimes car rental companies seem to be a law unto themselves.

Bear in mind also that most car hire companies here require that you be at least 23 years of age to hire a car.

And you need to be a credit card holder.

Some companies may ask whether your license has any endorsements.
What does that mean? Well, for example, in the UK or Australia you get points for driving offences such as speeding and after a certain number of points are reached, your license is revoked for a period of time. So, do you have any ‘points’ on your license?

Another endorsement would be if your license stipulates that you need to wear spectacles or contact lenses while driving.

And IDL is an International Driver’s License for people who want to drive in another country.  An IDL is sometimes called an IDP, or International Driver’s Permit.  A valid IDL can be used to drive in Canada temporarily.

Validity

IDLs are valid for driving in Canada for up to one year if you are a tourist.  However, If you are a resident of Ontario, even a temporary resident, an IDL is only valid for 90 days.  If you wish to continue driving in Ontario you must apply for an Ontario Driver’s Licence before your IDL expires. The Ontario Government requires you to apply for your Ontario Driver’s License within 60 days if you are a resident and you wish to continue driving.

How to get an IDL

If you wish to get an IDL, you must apply for it in your home country.  Most Driver Licensing authorities should be able to provide you with information on how to apply for an IDL in your home country.

Generally, to apply for an IDL you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a full, valid driver’s licence from your home country
  • Submit two passport style photographs
  • Submit your application to your local driving authority

If you have an IDL issued in Canada, it is not valid on any road in Canada, the United States or Mexico. If you have an IDL, you must still carry your original driver’s licence with you for it to be valid.  An IDL cannot be used as proof of your driving experience
