An Irish backpacker is due to appear in court in Mildura this morning after crashing a car during a police chase.

Police say they began pursing the car when the driver reportedly failed to stop after being involved in an earlier crash.

It is alleged the man was travelling up to 130 kilometres an hour in an 80 kilometre zone.

Police say the pursuit lasted about 30 seconds when the driver went over a roundabout and destroyed the sump on the car.

Police say the car belonged to a backpackers' residence in the area.

The 23-year old who has an International Driver's License, is likely to face a number of charges, including dangerous driving and drink driving.

Tourism Ireland in Johannesburg informed us that if you have a South African driver’s licence, you do not require an international licence to drive in Ireland.

This also applies in the UK. Although the local AA always says that an international driver’s licence is required, this is not so, as we have used hired cars in the UK with our South African licences.
