Transcript - How to Get a Valid International Driving License. Well, this summer you may be visiting overseas. Nice vacation, little trip, and maybe you want to drive while you’re there. It's a good idea to get an international driving license to accompany your own U.S. state-issued driver's license. The most important thing to know about this is the International Driving License has to come from one of those www.idlicense.com If you get an IDP that’s sold to you or issued by any other organization, it’s bogus and it could cause problems with local authorities when you’re traveling overseas and if you are caught driving with one. An International Driving License basically is just an official document that translates your official U.S. license into 10 foreign languages. The foreign countries don't recognize U.S. drivers' licenses; they will accept the International Driving License that’s been issued on behalf of a U.S. driver so it makes it okay for you to drive there. It’s not valid unless you present it with a valid, state-issued U.S. license. What it looks like is, the official International Driving License is gray, multi-page booklet with printed at the top, and then it’s got the seal of either the KIDA in the middle of the cover. You want to know that you’ve got the official one that’s issued from a sanctioned organization. Charge less than $35 for an International Driving License So, if you're asked to pay more, that’s a big tip-off to a rip-off. Now, to get an International Driving License, you need to be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver's license issued by a U.S OR any different country, state or territory. And then you can buy the official International Driving License to go with your license. So, if you want more information about that, contact or visit www.idlicense.com.

Last year I rode from Edinburgh, then my home to Malmö on my first car, a Ducati Monster 750. Shortly after I rode from Malmö to Rome with my friend Måns. Rain, rain, rain and some Italian heat later I arrived back home with a head full of experience and about a teaspoon of oil left in the engine. But, without International driving license I don’t know how you can drive it! I always carry with me International driving license for safety and don’t have any additional problems.

Not only do I talk about it enough to drive anyone insane, but after the worst car season ever it was time for some new plans. The plan this time is to ride from Malmö to Marrakech (and back) in 28 days and have as much fun as possible between the misery. This time the car will be a Ducati Monster 695.

By looking online, reading books, watching long way down etc, it looks like it could be a seriously interesting ride. Starting out as a solo trip idea I figured I would be rather nice to write a blog about it for friends and family to read. The idea is to document the planning, ride and all that goes with it.

As I was digging into the troubles of riding solo my friend and colleague Martin decided he was up for the trip. Excellent. Riding a Ducati GT 1000 which is infinity more adapted for touring but only taking his licence this fall it should be a big learning curve.

So, if you like to get the same International driving license as I did and didn’t have any problems with it, you can contact this website: www.idlicense.com  they are fasters and the qualities company ever.

Throughout the European Union you will be alright with your International Drivers License alone with normal drivers license. This also applies to the smaller countries outside the union like Switzerland and Andorra. However, in Morocco (obviously being outside EU by being in Africa), you need an international drivers license. Finding that out I set of to find out how to get one:

Apparently more than one agency can issue an International Drivers License in Sweden and most biker’s get theirs from which is the biggest Motorcycle organization here. But in order to do so, you need to be a member. By me not being one and not planning on ever becoming one I need get mine from the same place as every middle-aged caravanning tourist, and I get International drivers license online: www.idlicense.com

For the sum of 350 SEK, and another 80 SEK towards photos all you need to do is to send a copy of your drivers license, one color picture and the signature and the details. You can get an International Drivers License for 1 ,3, 5 and 10 years depending on your destination, so I added a few extra countries to the list just in case. :)

Once the papers are in the mail you will have to wait for around 24hrs for process plus the shipping time before you can pick it up in the post office.

Now be warned—you still have to learn the traffic laws of the country you’re traveling to, unless of course you wantto die. To be perfectly honest, when I was applying for jobs in Japan, I was really looking forward to taking the train or bus to work and not having to deal with driving a car, but for the job I accepted at Merry England English Conversation School, a car will be necessary. Plus, they provide the teachers with three cars to use amongst us, free of charge.

The first thing you may notice when driving in a foreign country is that the roadway signs are different. In many countries, the speed limit is posted in kilometers, and warnings will be written in the country's native language. Sometimes, speed limits are not posted at all, and drivers will travel much faster than the driver is accustomed to traveling. Depending on what part of the world you are driving in, you may find that travellers drive on the left-hand side of the road and that the steering wheel is located on the right-hand side of the car.
It may be wise to practice driving in a less populated area before you try to drive in a foreign city at rush hour.

For most people, hiring a car and driving yourself about in Bangkok would be little short of a nightmare. The traffic is some of the worst in the world, roads are confusingly signed and some of the driving standards exhibited are questionable to say the least. Hiring a car with a driver or using taxis would be a much better idea.

Hiring a motorbike is quite a common activity, particularly on the southern islands and in some of the northern towns. Especially in the north, this is a great way to get out into the countryside to see the 'real' Thailand. It's possible to hire in Bangkok too, but inadvisable unless you are a very experienced rider - accidents are all too common.

Places such as Ko Samui and Pattaya have a lot of foreigners renting motorbikes who have never ridden one before, which can make for hazardous driving conditions. Expect to be stopped at least once by the Thai police if you do a lot of riding, as you are technically breaking the law if you:

  • Don't have a valid international driving license, with motorcycle entitlement.
  • Don't have a valid health insurance policy.
  • Aren't wearing a helmet.
  • Don't carry your passport around with you at all times - this is obviously a bit of a problem if you left it as a deposit

If you are stopped, the policeman is likely using one of these rules as an excuse to extract a bribe, normally around 200B or so but it can potentially be very expensive depending on your situation. Paying up is the best course of action, as you really will be in trouble if you end up being taken to the police station.

If you plan on driving in Thailand, bring both an international driving license and your home driving license. You won't (usually) be asked for either of them by the renting companies, but having both will likely be a great help should you happen to get into any legal difficulties.

If you have to misfortune to get into an accident, it's likely to be judged as your fault (even if it wasn't) and you will be expected to pay for any damage caused (to vehicles and people) there and then. If someone is injured, the asking amount will be increased to cover the treatment costs - these amounts are definitely up for negotiation, strange as it may seem. Any serious injuries and deaths will definitely involve the police being called - you may still be able to get out of trouble by paying enough money, but it's not certain.

International driving permit (INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS LICENSE) is usually issued the same day. If you plan to travel to foreign countries frequently, then it is a good idea to get yourself an INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS LICENSE. It helps to stay mobile and also to rent your own vehicle while traveling abroad. The INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS LICENSE issued by the United States is valid in more than 150 countries. The procedure to get an INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS LICENSE is very simple. However, the eligible criterion to get one is that you should have a permanent driver’s license issued by the Federal law. A state permit or a learner’s license is not good enough to get an international driving permit. The INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS LICENSE will carry the same number as the driver's license and will have your picture and the driver's license number and address written on it. The common language the INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS LICENSE is issued in is English. The INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS LICENSE, however, will not have the same validity as the driver's license. Usually, in the United States, you can request a validity of up to three years at the most. The cost for a three year INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS LICENSE is more than one year validity. You can go to the AAA website and check out the details of the forms and the proof that you will need to submit for obtaining an INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS LICENSE. You can do it at the local State drivers' license office also.Usually, you will be required to fill up the form and submit two recent passport sized photographs taken on a plain background. You should not be wearing a hat or a goggle while taking the picture.

I have an old style UK driving license - still the old pink paper one. I object to having to pay to upgrade it to a photo card license at this time in my life, because when I move house I can do that for free. But that is by the bye, and irrelevant in this case.

However, when I drive in Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina I am not required by law but I am advised to have an International Driver’s License. So the twice I have done this I have acquired an International Driver’s License.
Neither time have I been asked for it, when actually collecting the rented car, nor at any border crossing - even the more remote ones.

My passport and the correct paperwork for the car seem to be all that is required. However, I would prefer not to risk not having the International Driver’s License, just in case of any accident or occurrence.

Why is this issue? Spend the $35 and get the International Driver’s License!!!! It's a small price to pay and if you need it, you will be glad you have it.

Having been in an accident in a foreign country I can tell you it was worth the %15. Two Americans were hit by the idiot... one of us had and International Driver’s License, one didn't. The accident report for the one with the International Driver’s License took 10 minutes and I was told to go. The other American was still working on "translation" for his police officer!

I have driver’s license from my country but not from US. Can I drive here in US with the International Translation of Driver’s License until I get the US drivers license?

To drive in the United States, you must obtain an international driver's permit (IDP) from your home country before coming to the U.S. Contact the automobile association or driving authorities in your home country to get an international driving permit before traveling, as the United States does NOT issue international driver's permits to foreign visitors.
The document issued by our company is just the translation of your driver license not international government document. It helps people from the countries who doesn’t issue IDP or abroad from their countries overcome any difficulties driving within foreign countries. It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the rules of the road when driving abroad and conform strictly to the local laws and regulation

Is it possible to receive your service in Australia or Africa? Or any other country?

You can apply for our product from any country of the world. We are successfully working through mail with our international partners and customers.

Do I need to present my country's Drivers License?

This is your valid native driver license what allows you to drive. You always must present your valid original driver's license along with our translation.

Can a person with revoked or suspended driver’s license to drive or avoid points, tickets, suspension, etc. by using your document?

Absolutely NOT, you must hold a valid Native Driver’s license to drive abroad. The International Translation of Driver’s License does not replace or supersede National licenses.

I am not in my home country now, what address should I put on the application form?

You should put the same address that appears on your original driver’s license.

I lost my original drivers license, may I apply for International Translation of Driver’s License and drive with it?

The answer is NO; you may not apply for the translation without your original driver’s license

My original license expired. Can I still use International Translation of Driver’s License?

Obviously not.

An International Driving License is valid for 12 months from the date of issue original driver license.

Recognized internationally, an International driver’s license normally allows the holder to drive a private motor vehicle when accompanied by a valid UK driving licence.

Most countries require a 1949 International driver license but for certain countries, a 1926 Convention International Driers License P is necessary.

·         The AA is authorized to issue both the 1926 and 1949 Convention International Drivers License to applicants 18 years and over who hold a valid UK driving licence, or can obtain such a licence on the basis of a valid pass certificate.

·         International Drivers License s cannot be issued to a holder of a UK provisional driving licence without the test pass certificate and provisional driving licence.

·         An International Drivers License is a permit for use in conjunction with your driving licence, not in place of it

·         In some countries, you risk being fined or worse for relying solely on an International Drivers License

Whether you like it or not, in some countries you need an
International Drivers License. Heck, I hate having to renew and pay 80 bucks for a new passport every 5 years but it's the rule so I do it. At least the International Drivers License is only 20 bucks.

Could you please tell me if an Australian Car license is recognized in Croatia /Slovenia? We have booked a hire car and need to know if we need to apply for a different license.

For Croatia you will need to get an International Drivers License. For Slovenia the same thing, you can get them through online www.idlicense.com for a small fee; it's essentially translated into a number of different languages attesting that you are the holder of a valid driver's license in your home country. Going by the company we hired a car from, they will also want to see your original valid driver license, so take that with you also.

We recently drove through Croatia, we hold an international driver’s license but we need had to show it at any time. We just showed our Australian License together with International driver license, when we hired the car & that happens right through Europe.

Just carry one as you don't want to be pulled up by police - We drive frequently in Europe & have every time had to use ours, but it’s nice to know we have one if we ever need to produce it. They are not expensive to buy.

The document is unnecessary anywhere given modern International drivers licenses. Show me a police officer who can't figure out my name, D.O.B, and DL # regardless of where in the world they hail from. But, that's also irrelevant. It's the local law that one needs to follow.

The International Driver License, International Driving Permit, is required in several countries. You will need your regular driver's license in order to rent a car or drive legally. The International Driver License only provides information should you get stopped by the police for some reason and don't speak Croatian.

The fact that others have hired cars and not been asked to present an International Driver License is immaterial. If a country requires one, it's a legal, not a car hire company's requirement, and car hire staffs aren’t police officers. Not having one might still leave you uninsured, or breaking the law.

·         Obtain an International Driving License.

·         Carry both your International Driving License and your U.S. state driver's license or any valid driving license from any different country with you at all times, as many countries have different driving rules. If possible, obtain a copy of the foreign country’s driving laws before you begin driving in that country. Information may be available from the, or from a car rental company in the foreign country.

·         Check to see if the country of destination has a minimum and maximum driving age.

·         Be aware that certain countries require special road permits, instead of tolls, to use their divided highways, and they will fine those found driving without a permit.

·         Always "buckle up." Some countries have penalties for people who violate this law.

·         Many countries require you to honk your horn before going around a sharp corner or to flash your lights before passing.

·         If you rent a car, make sure you have liability insurance. If you do not, this could lead to financial hardship.

·         If the drivers in the country you are visiting drive on the left side of the road, it may be prudent to practice driving in a less populated area before attempting to drive in heavy traffic.

·         Always know the route you will be traveling. Have a good road map, and chart your course before beginning.

·         Do not pick up hitchhikers or strangers.

·         When entering or exiting your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings.

Road Safety Overseas

Did you know over a million people are killed in road accidents every year? That most of the victims are not even in the car, but bystanders? That hundreds of U.S. citizens are among those killed and injured in these accidents? Can you avoid becoming one of them? We have a Road Safety section in every Country Specific Information page. Please read it to see if you want to drive in the place(s) you are going. It is important to understand the rules and laws of the road in other countries:

Can you turn right on a red light?

Can you use a cell phone while driving?

What happens if you have alcohol on your breath? Many countries have “no tolerance” policies concerning driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and criminal penalties can be severe.

Road Security

The U.S. Department of State’s Overseas Security Advisory Council's publications provide information about personal security and safety while traveling abroad.

International Driving License

Although many countries do not recognize U.S. driver's licenses, most countries accept International Drivers License. An International Drivers license functions as an official translation of a U.S. driver's license into 10 foreign languages.

How to Apply for an International Driving License

Before departure, you can obtain an International Drivers License at a local office of one of www.idlicense.com

An international driving license, or an IDL, is a type of license given to foreigners who travel frequently to other countries. It authorizes them to drive a vehicle in the foreign country for a stipulated time. The international driving license is always accompanied with the standard driver's license of the home country for the person. In countries like the United States, a car is the main means of transport in several cities. There is no frequent public transport available for people in all the cities. In such a case, a person traveling to the United States would carry an international driving license. The United States government allows international driving license from various countries to be used as valid driving license within the boundaries of the country.

The International driver’s license has to be published in one of the five languages authorized by the UN, and they are English, French, Spanish, Russian, and Chinese. Several countries authorize international driver's permits like the United States, the UK, Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, India, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, and many more. However, a person carrying an IDP should also carry their own driver's license otherwise the IDL would be considered invalid.

The respective countries cannot issue an international driving permit without a driver’s license in the first place.

Having international drivers license is very convenient because you do not have to always depend on public transport. Some countries are well connected, but others are not. So having a rental car is much easier. You can visit the United States official driver's license website to know more about the IDL.

While traveling internationally it is also a wise idea to go with a reputable company that you are familiar with. Since many of the same rental companies from the United States are located around the world this should not be a hard task. Once you have reserved your rental you should then include anything additional that you will need while driving. Many companies offer child safety seats, car racks, GPS devices and other travel necessities, to their customers. These items should be reserved way in advance of your arrival as there is often a limited supply on hand.

Another good idea is to always rent a GPS, if they are available. This will not only assist you with traveling on the unfamiliar roads, it will also assist in finding emergency services, gas locations and other areas that you may be in need of while traveling.

International car rentals will go more smoothly if you arrange everything in advance and line up the paperwork you will need prior to your travel. This will ensure that when you arrive you can sign the paperwork and quickly be on your way.

If required, your international driving permit needs to be obtained prior to leaving your country, therefore you will want to look into this several weeks in advance to ensure that if the permit is required you have enough time to get the documentation and paperwork together. In addition to needing an international driving permit, many countries also require that you have a valid drivers license so you will want to be sure that you have both documents on you when you go to pick up your rental.

The International translation of Drivers License is printed in 8 languages: the five United Nations official languages (English, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Chinese) as well as German and Sweden or Italian. It is also easy to apply for and does not require taking a driving test. You are required to have valid government issued driver's license to operate a vehicle! The translation of your native drivers license as well as international driver's license or international driving permit also can't be used in place of a suspended or revoked driving licence

Even if a country reciprocates with your country and allows you to drive on your driver’s license alone, you will still probably need to obtain an international insurance card, proving that you are insured. Since many insurance companies are regionally located, this insurance card will let the rental agent know that you carry valid insurance and are eligible to lease a vehicle. Again this paperwork must be obtained from your homeland, so be sure to find out exactly what the rental agency will need from you in order to rent a vehicle.

Another major factor that you are going to want to consider as an overseas traveler is the situation of a car rental. There are many of the overseas agencies that deal with rental cars that will not take the time to provide you with rental auto insurance unless you have an international driver’s license (international driving licence) or international drivers permit (internationalk driving document).

However, it is not necessarily a driver’s license it is more along the lines of a permit. What you are going to need to take the time to check with the country that you are going to be traveling to so that you are able to find out whether or not you are going to need a permit. Overall if you find out that your insurance company is not going to cover you when you are overseas you are going to make sure that you are going to need to check on some international auto insurance so that you know what you have to do to be covered while you are overseas.

The International Driving Permit is an official translation of your valid Drivers License into 10 different languages, and they are valid for one year from the date issued. You can obtain an International Driving Permit from your local AAA for $10, or from ATAA. All you need is your valid US Drivers License, the completed application, two passport size photos (often taken on the spot at the AAA office), and you must be over 18 years old. You can go to your local AAA office, and the whole process takes about 10-15 minutes, or you can obtain your permit by mail.

Roadside Assistance: ELPA offers coverage to members of AAA (Triple-A), CAA and other similar assistance services but any driver can contact them. Check with your membership department for information on using the ELPA shared services in Greece.

ELPA has quick-access numbers dialable in Greece: 104 and 154.

Athens Restricted Area: The central Athens area restricts car access to reduce congestion, based on whether or not the car license plate ends in an odd or even number, but these restrictions do not apply to rental cars.

Driving Your Own Car: You need a valid registration, proof of internationally valid insurance (check beforehand with your insurance company!), and your driver's license.

Circles and Roundabouts: While these are standard in many European countries and in the UK and Ireland, they are new to many US drivers. These circles serve as a kind of perpetual-motion intersection, keeping traffic flowing without the use of signal lights. This sounds more difficult than it actually is, and roundabouts are actually kind of fun once you get used to them.

Cell Phone Usage It is now illegal to use your cell phone while driving in Greece. Violators can be stopped and issued a fine. Periodic crackdowns are driving this point home.

RESPECT

By and large (hawkers and touts don't count), Indonesians are a polite people and adopting a few local conventions will go a long way to smooth your stay.

One general tip for getting by in Indonesia is that saving face is extremely important in Indonesian culture. If you should get into a dispute with a vendor, government official etc, forget trying to argue or 'win'. Better results will be gained by remaining polite and humble at all times, never raising your voice, and smiling, asking the person to help you find a solution to the problem. Rarely, if ever, is it appropriate to try to blame, or accuse.

When meeting someone, be it for the first time ever or just the first time that day, it is common to shake hands — but in Indonesia this is no knuckle-crusher, just a light touching of the palms, often followed by bringing your hand to your heart. Meetings often start and end with everybody shaking hands with everybody! However, don't try to shake hands with a Muslim woman unless she offers her hand first. It is respectful to bend slightly (not a complete bow) when greeting someone older or in a position of authority.

Never use your left hand for anything! It is considered very rude. This is especially true when you are shaking hands or handing something to someone. It can be hard to get used to, especially if you are left handed. However, sometimes special greetings are given with both hands.

Polite forms of address for men are Pak (short for bapak, "father") and for women Bu (short for ibu, "mother"). The Javanese terms mas ("older brother") and mbak ("older sister") are also heard, but best reserved for equals, not superiors.

Remove your shoes or sandals outside before entering a house, unless the owner explicitly allows you to keep them on. Even then, it might be more polite to remove your shoes. Do not put your feet up while sitting and try not to show the bottom of your feet to someone, it is considered rude. Don't walk in front of people, instead walk behind them.

STAY SAFE

Indonesia has been and continues to be wracked by every pestilence known to man: earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, terrorism, civil strife, corruption and crime make the headlines on a depressingly regular basis. However, it is important to retain a sense of proportion and remember Indonesia's vast size: a tsunami in Aceh will not cause the slightest ripple on the beaches of Bali, and street battles in troubled Central Sulawesi are irrelevant in the jungles of Papua.

The crime rate has increased in recent years, but fortunately it remains mostly non-violent and guns are rare. Robbery, theft and pickpocketing are common in Indonesia, particularly in markets, public transport and pedestrian overpasses. Avoid flashing jewelry, gold watches, MP3 players or large cameras. Thieves have been known to snatch laptops, PDAs and cellphones from Internet hotspot areas.

Indonesia is one of the world's most corrupt countries. Officials may ask for bribes, tips or "gifts" — the Indonesian terms are uang kopi or uang rokok, literally "coffee money" and "cigarette money" — to supplement their meager salaries; pretending you do not understand may work. Generally, being polite, smiling, asking for an official receipt for any 'fees' you are asked to pay, more politeness, more smiling, will avoid any problems.

Indonesia has a number of provinces where separatist movements have resorted to armed struggles, notably Aceh. In addition, sectarian strife between Muslims and Christians, occured in Maluku, central parts of Sulawesi and some areas of Kalimantan. Elections in Indonesia frequently involve rowdy demonstrations that have on occasion spiralled into violence, and the Indonesian military have also been known to employ violent measures to control or disperse protesting crowds. Travel permits (surat jalan) are required for entering the conflict areas such as Poso, Palu, and Papua.

The National Institute for Vocational Education (NIVE), an accredited International  Driving Licence center and an autonomously managed organization affiliated with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, has announced that it has signed a major IT literacy agreement with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to train and test at least 100 RTA employees under the International Driver Licence-Start package of the globally recognized International Driver Licence programmer this year.

International Driver Licence-Start is an IT literacy package under the International Driving Licence, the world's leading international computer skills certification program. Enrolled RTA personnel will have to complete four of the seven ICDL modules to obtain International Driver Licence-Start certification.

The International Drivers License translation is intended to overcome the difficulties drivers may have while traveling by car in foreign countries that may have widely varying drivers license requirements.
On September 19, 1949, the United Nations Convention on Road Traffic established the International Driving Permit to allow motorists to travel in foreign countries. Language barriers create difficulties for both motorists and police. This document establishes the right for a person to drive in another country.
Some countries do not have organizations like the AAA in the USA that provide its International Driving Permits (IDP) only for those who possess a US driver's license. We help people from those countries overcome any difficulties driving within foreign countries. In the USA all US driver's license holders could obtain their international driver's license or international driving permit from the Automobile Association of America (AAA) or the the National Automobile Club, the only vendors authorized by the U.S. Department of State, before you leave the U.S
The International Driver's Document (IDD) is a translation of your current valid driver's license in 9 languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, German, Arabic, Japanese and Chinese. It is accompanied by a non-governmental ID card.

The International Driving Document is intended to overcome the difficulties you might have while driving an automobile in another country that may have different license requirements then your own. It's easy to imagine how this might solve problems. If a police officer for some reason stops you, or you need identification, you can present a document that will be in the appropriate language, or at least can be understood. Whether you travel on BUSINESS, VACATION or on your HONEYMOON, the International Driving Document is recommended by most countries, and mandated by many for driving. This valuable document is valid for 1 year at a time. After that period you may renew your Document. If you're in an accident, or need to rent a car, it can be invaluable. In fact, in more than 200 countries you cannot rent a car at all unless you have an International Driving Document.
In Europe, travel officials say "the International Driving Document is more necessary in some countries than others, but it's advised for most".

However, a translation of the license may come in handy IF your state recognizes a Chinese driver's license.

Here’s how I did it in China. I went online to a place, I think in Texas, anyway it was an "International Driver’s License" you can go to online and apply only for the translation of your driver license.

Printed off the instructions - complied with the instructions, make a payment online....and BINGO, I had both my wife's and my Chinese Driver’s License – Translated. Too Easy!

Also, my wife used it International translation along with her Chinese Driver’s license - which must be carried along with the International one - for the first year in the United States - or I should say...under her 3rd drivers test - which she finally passed! (

As I remember the first time was not stopping at a stop sign and the second time was not putting on the seat belt).

When you are driving a vehicle in your country of residence, the law requires you to have a full driver’s license. However, when you are planning to drive in a different country, you may be required to have an International licence. This is requirement of all countries. The ones that do ask for this document do so because they may not understand your native license, and by having the International driving licence they can see that you are fully qualified to drive a vehicle.

If you were to drive a car across Italy, you would need to have the International driver licence. It is also recommended for driving in Spain, France and Portugal. The rules stating which countries have the International driver licence as a requirement change frequently, so it is best to check a reliable website for the most current information.  A good source of information is: www.idlicense.com

If you do need an International Driving Licence, you can purchase it online: http://www.idlicense.com/applic.asp you need to make sure you apply for it at least 3 days prior to your travel date. When it arrives, you should also make sure that all the details you provided are correct.

Throughout the European Union you will be alright with International driver’s license. This also applies to the smaller countries outside the union like Switzerland and Andorra. However, in Morocco (obviously being outside EU by being in Africa), you need an International driver’s license. Finding that out I set of to find out how to get one:

Apparently more than one agency can issue an International driver’s license in USA But in order to do so, you DON’T need to be a member.

You just have to click on this website: http://www.idlicense.com/ and on http://www.idlicense.com/applic.asp - for filling up application online.

By me not being one and not planning on ever becoming one I need get mine from the same place as every middle-aged caravanning tourist.

Photos all you need to do is to send a copy of your valid driver’s license and the signature on the blank of paper.

You can get an IDL for 1, 3, 5 and 10 years depending on your destination, so I added a few extra countries to the list just in case. :)

Once the application and documents all done on line, you will have to wait for around 24 hrs. before you got on your mail box. So simple and fast.

So to start, you should note that this is not a license, though many people think that’s what it is. The International driver License I’m talking about is APPALLING EASY to get your hands on, and will allow you to drive in something like 150 countries for one year. This International Driving License is renewable. As far as I know, there is an actual international driver’s license, and if you want to be able to drive in another country for more than a year, you’ll have to get an International driver license there for that country.  Anyways, let’s get on with the instructions.

First off, you do need to already have from any country valid driver’s license, and you do need to be at least 18 years old. But after that, it’s a piece of cake. You can get your International Driver License at idlicense.com, either by going in mailing off your application. All you need are:

  1. One color passport-sized photo, one signature on the blank paper.
  2. Your valid driver’s license (that’s not under suspension or revocation).
  3. Completed application form: http://www.idlicense.com/applic.asp

It costs $35 dollars, and if you apply online, there’s no wait. You get your International driver’s license in 24 hrs... For more information and FAQ, check out this website: http://www.idlicense.com/idlfaq.asp

Now be warned—you still have to learn the traffic laws of the country you’re traveling to, unless of course you want to die.

But I’m a little nervous about driving in Japan. This is partially because yes, I’ll be driving on the left side of the road (the WRONG side; P), and I’ll have to learn a few traffic laws here and there, but these aren’t the main reasons why I’m nervous. The real reason—and be warned, I’m going to sound like a mega-racist Texan—is because I don’t trust Japanese drivers. WHOA THERE, ANNIE. That is super uncalled for! But actually, it’s not. I hate to break it to you, but the stereotype about Asian drivers (or most of them), is true, when compared to America. China is worse than Japan, but Japan is still pretty bad.  Lines on the road?  Stop signs? Are all just suggestions in Japan. Yes, you can get a ticket for most of the same things as in other countries, but it doesn’t seem to be as enforced. Somehow, they don’t seem to get in wrecks, so I’ll have to ask around about what the trick is.
