AN illegal immigrant was caught doing more than 90mph on the M5 motorway near Worcester. Ken Chen was spotted by an unmarked police car doing 92.06 mph (148 kph) on the motorway near Strensham and when he was pulled over it was discovered he had no MOT, an incorrect driving licence and was carrying a fake young person’s railcard.
He was arrested and taken to Worcester police station where he told police he was an illegal immigrant who had come from China in December last year. Chen admitted fraud, driving otherwise in accordance with his licence, driving with no MOT, and speeding when he appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Friday. He did have an international driving licence, but because his Chinese licence had expired the international one was invalid.
The court was told 25-year-old Chen had worked in China for six months prior to coming to the country, and his payment was a passage to the UK. Since arriving in the country he has been living with friends in Newport, Wales, and helping them with their business in return for free board and lodging. After being arrested by police he was interviewed by the immigration service and has been given an appointment to claim asylum. Edward Gaynor-Smith, defending, said: “He decided to come to the UK last year for a better life.
“He is very sorry that he appears before you today, it was not the start that he wanted.”
Chen, who had spent two days in custody, was sentenced to two days in prison for the fraud, and the time he has served was counted.
For speeding he was given five points on his licence, and for driving otherwise in accordance with his licence he was given three points.
